DISTANCE LEARNING 2.0

ATTENDANCE & GRADING

We recognize that regular participation and engagement is important to ensure:
*the academic and social emotional development of our students,
*students have access to education opportunities, and
*students are able to make adequate progress.

To that end, we are following guidance provided by the California Department of Education and Senate Bill No. 98 (SB 98) in the implementation of attendance for the upcoming school year which requires schools to track student participation in distance learning and report chronic absenteeism rates.

Attendance and participation continue to be important during distance learning and students should make efforts to participate in the scheduled programming every day. Our Distance Learning Policy and Procedures provides information on how CWC LA is managing compulsory attendance based on SB 98 requirements and guidelines.

Students who miss scheduled learning engagements or do not complete any assigned work for the day will continue to be marked absent. Truancy letters and notifications are generated based on the attendance marks students receive from their teacher(s). Schools will be notifying parents of attendance on a regular, if not, on a daily basis to ensure students are making all possible efforts to be in attendance.

If you believe your student has received an absence mark in error, please connect with your child’s teacher(s) directly and CC your school’s attendance email.

If you need to provide a reason for the student absence, please email your school’s attendance email:

Attendance Policy
Daily participation in distance learning may include, but is not limited to, evidence of participation in online activities, completion of regular assignments, completion of assessments, and contacts between school employees and students or parents or guardians. The school will document daily participation for each student on each school day, in whole or in part, for which distance learning is provided. The school will track student daily participation in distance learning as follows:

Live synchronous instruction:
Teachers will take attendance daily during Morning Meeting at the elementary level and each live Zoom session in middle school. To be marked “present” students will be required to either

a) be on the camera during the Zoom, or
b) voice “present” (or equivalent) when called upon on the audio, or
c) chat “present” in the Zoom chat, AND be visible on the Zoom participant list (student’s first and last name).

For asynchronous instruction, a student will be counted as present if they participate in or submit an assignment through the learning platforms selected for instruction (i.e., Nearpod, IXL, Google Classroom).

If your child is having trouble attending our program due to technical difficulties, lack of access to technology, or school materials, please immediately notify your school of enrollment at your school’s attendance email.

In addition, students should have up-to-date immunization records on file.  We’ve been advised that the LA County Department of Health has not provided flexibility to immunization requirements for school entry  despite schools providing 100% distance learning.  Immunizations remain a condition of enrollment and schools will continue to request and collect these records.

Students who do not have all required immunizations should not be attending school. Students will be marked absent until the required documentation is submitted. For 7th grade students, a Tdap is required prior to the entry of 7th grade. Immunizations are a condition of enrollment.

The following immunization clinics are available at low or no cost:

If your child is eligible for a medical exemption waiver, a parent or guardian must submit a signed, written statement from a physician (MD or DO) licensed in California which states:

  • The specific nature of the physical condition or medical circumstance of the child for which a licensed physician does not recommend immunization.
  • Each specific required vaccine that is being exempted.
  • Whether the medical exemption is permanent or temporary.
  • If the exemption is temporary, an expiration date no more than 12 calendar months from the date of signing.
