Letter from Mark Kleger-Heine

Dear Citizens of the World Community,
I am honored to serve as the next Executive Director of Citizens of the World Los Angeles. I feel privileged to join the strong CWC community that is providing an outstanding constructivist and experiential education to students who reflect the incredible diversity our great city has to offer. Your schools are on to something remarkable and special and I am thrilled to be able to lead the next phase of the organization.
As both an educator and a parent, I have long been inspired by the CWC model, where children are being prepared to thrive in our complex and multicultural society, and navigate the world with confidence and independence. As I look ahead, I know that CWC’s education will have long-lasting benefits for students and will make an impact on our society. Our communities need more citizens of the world.
I have dedicated my career to educating children and am excited to take my next professional step with you. I am a former teacher who has spent my career working in community-based education-related nonprofit organizations. Most recently, in 2007 I helped found the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, which is dedicated to improving historically challenged schools in low-income areas of Los Angeles. For the last seven years I have served as Chief Operating Officer and helped grow the organization into a network of 16 schools serving over 14,000 students while working closely with LAUSD. I am looking forward to extending my Los Angeles school management experience to CWC.
As I begin my transition, I look forward to meeting and hearing from each of you. We will be scheduling several opportunities over the coming months to meet each other in advance of my official start date in early April 2015. I am excited to roll up my sleeves and work side-by-side with all of you to advance CWC’s mission. Together will accomplish incredible things for students.
Thank you again for this opportunity to serve and wishing you a wonderful holiday season.
Best wishes,
Mark Kleger-Heine
